Piercings and tradition? What about them?

So quite a number of you have some idea about piercings, be it on the ears, naval, genitals, nose, lips and all the other places you can think of.
Well, I'm about to show you something that may and will change your perception about piercings. You'll be suprised  at the Genesis you'll find in my revelation.

Ok let me take you back to more than a thousand years ago.
So the figure you see above is of a 5,300 year old mummy apparently it's the oldest mummy with a piercing- ear piercing to be precise. So it's only safe to say piercings date back to 5,300 years ago.
Different cultures and civilisations have had their reasons for doing piercings at what ever places they put them and at what ever times they did them.

Well you'd be intrigued to know that some people back in the day believed that demons could posses people through the ears and they also believed  any type of metal could repel these demons, so they decided to pierce their ears and put metals in them. With the believe that the metal would repel the demons.

Tongue piercings.
Interestingly enough others also used, more specifically tongue piercings to communicate with their gods. Ladies and gentlemen, critics and fans. I present to you,the evolution of the tongue piercing 😌

It originated between the 14th and 16th centuries as a blood ritual commonly known to the Aztecs and mayans. A thread would be passed through the piercing to enhance blood flow.
Tongue piercings resurfaced in the 1980's with the opening of Gauntlet in L. A -the First professional piercing shop in the US. By Elayne Angel.
But in our part of the world, tongue piercings aren't really a good idea. It's left for those who wanna be brave and adventurous. Well, at least that's what I know it to be.

Nose piercings
Yipeee! One of my favourites.
Would it bother you if I were to tell you that nose piercings were biblical and not a practice for" heathen" but actually very symbolic?
Well, if it would, then that's too bad.
Genesis 24:22
[22]Then at last, when the camels had finished drinking, he took out a gold ring for her nose and two large gold bracelets for her wrists.
Nose rings back in the day were no joke. Wearing one meant that you were married. Well, wearing one made of expensive material such as gold. That's why a gold nose ring was given to Rebekah.
But it has come to stay that,in my country (Ghana), we think nose rings are for a particular group of people. In essence, Muslims and Indians. This is because we mostly see them wearing it. And some of us believe that girls who have them may have some promiscuous tendencies or are "bad girls." Well. It shouldn't be so. Because this type of body modification only came to stay in the late 20th century as a fashion, diluting it's importance. Because in India when a woman wears a nose stud on her left nose it symbolises ferminity and fertility. And the nose rings are for married women, the bigger the nose ring, the wealthier the family. It is also believed or said that the piercing also helps reduce the pain of childbearing and menstruation. Well. So they say.

What is has become today.

Although, it is still a common and well known practice to the Berber and Bedouin people of North Africa and middle east where husbands give their brides a gold nose ring upon marrying her.

That's all there is about piercings for this time. You'll get more info on the very different types in my next post, and I might even elaborate on how to take care of your piercings and clean piercing jewellery. 🤗
